nesting element of unit

Shown above are the two smaller units in there nesting option. This element allows the pieces to be stored in the minimal of spaces and also allows for easier shipping and transport.

stacking shelving option

As a set of four this unit can be stacked to form a shelving unit. The slatted elements act on a practical level as a locator, however on an aesthetical level it offers a harmony between the individual elements to achieve a feeling of wholeness and continuity.

five piece set

Another option for the five piece set is for a flat screen entertainment unit, with the bench piece providing the location for the flat screen and the shelving providing the storage. These elements can also be used as individual pieces as stools and tables if needed.

joinery detail

Shown above is the joinery detail for the stacking/ nesting shelving unit. The joinery in this image is only dry fit and the final joinery will have concealed dowel locating pins and once assembled a series of mitre keys will be added for structural integrety adding long grain to long grain glueing surfaces.

cabinet assembly

As i await for mamterial to mount the fabric images i have assembled the unit so far. The outter shell has been veneered and doors and drawers temporarily mounted. I have also purchased stock for the feet from the Canberra Timber and Working with Wood Show. For this i have bought a small amount of Wenge, (for those unfamiliar with this timber it is a dark wood, similar in colour to ebony only alot cheaper.) The idea at this stage is for the feet to be 80mm high and a turned taper from approx 60mm to 25mm. This style of foot and the nature of the selected timber will hopefully provide the cabinet with a feeling of levitation as the grounding of the feet should disappear underneath the unit.

In construction i am leaning toward fixing threaded rod to the feet and installing threaded inserts into the base of the cabinet.

dry run of second smallest unit

With all the components and most of the joinery finished i decided to do a dry run of the second smallest unit to judge the aesthetics, scale and usability of the design. The above image shows the piece in its stool option, which is also the shelving option when used in the set.

dry rub of second smallest unit, table option

Shown here is the side table option. I feel that this piece has succeeded in achieving everything it has set out to, its potential to be a commercially viable piece of fine furniture, i believe is great and has endless possibilities with the multiple nature of the set.

stacking/nesting unit model stacking/nesting unit model2

The images above are models of the stacking/ nesting shelving, side table and stool that i have previously mentioned. The slated component that acts as the locating function when stacked was inspired by George Nelson’s, Nelson bench.

The idea is for these four plus one larger unit to be sold as a set, nesting to save on transport costs and constructed from solid timber giving it an immediate target audience and price point for the commercial viability of the design.

Images for cabinet

door one image door two image

I realise it has been a while now since i last posted anything to do with the Cardboard Memories cabinet, this is due to the fact that i have put the project on the backfoot as it has already been graded from last semesters works i have had to focus on my new multifunction furniture projects.

The project since last i post on the topic has now had the final veneers shaped to the outside, (i will post soon with pics on the process used for this) and the images have turned up from the press!!!

As you have probably guessed the images shown are the images i have decided to go with for the two outer fabric doors. The abstract of the Eiffel tower detail is intended to evoke memories in the viewer as it is such an iconic piece of architecture everyone has an idea or a memory attached to such a piece. Hence tying in with the Cardboard Memories concept!

The material used to print on is Peel Ply as this is the thickest weave fabric i could get the didnt have a backing, therefore making it the perfect compromise between image and sound quality.

Nesting/multifunction stool and table

August 6, 2009 key3designs Leave a comment

Another design i am looking into for the multifunction concept of this semester is a design for a two piece set of stools which double as side tables. My idea for the marketing of this piece is to be sold as a set (nesting, one slightly smaller and one slightly larger) and also to be sold as three sets which provide the user with an intimate relationship with the space they select for the pieces.

The idea is to provide the three larger units with the ability to lock and create a coffee table and the smaller to be stools around said table. The other is to lock side by side creating a seating and table combination.

Cheshire – pencil case

cheshire - pencil case imageAnother work from my previous projects is ‘Cheshire’ a timber pencil case constructed using the coopered vessel method where angled pieces of timber combine to create an enclosed whole.

This piece, as with the ‘Internal’ bedside tables was inspired in part by japanese architecture and traditional japanese construction processes. The stand in particular holds closely to this concept and provides a perfect balance for the piece in both the open and closed versions of the case.

The stainless steel ends have been treated to provide another element to the finish of the piece, complimenting the natural aesthetics of the timbers chosen in construction and contrasting the brass hinges.

The cheshire title comes from the cheeky grin created as the piece sits with the lid slightly open. Providing a character and interactive element to the piece.

stacking/nesting multi function furniture

Following on with the direction i am taking for this the final semester. I intend on exploring several ideas and concepts. The first being a stacking/nesting shelving unit which also acts as a set of stools and tables.

The versality of this piece is to be marketed towards the small area living and the idea that the end user can determine the final use for a piece instead of the peice dictating the space and use of an object.

The initial concept of this idea is shown in the model (image attached) the slated top and bottom act as a locking mechanism and locator for the stacking option. This also gives an added element of interaction of light and negative space when the piece is in its seperate form. The solid sides add structural strength and act as a uniforming element when in its stacked component.
