door one image door two image

I realise it has been a while now since i last posted anything to do with the Cardboard Memories cabinet, this is due to the fact that i have put the project on the backfoot as it has already been graded from last semesters works i have had to focus on my new multifunction furniture projects.

The project since last i post on the topic has now had the final veneers shaped to the outside, (i will post soon with pics on the process used for this) and the images have turned up from the press!!!

As you have probably guessed the images shown are the images i have decided to go with for the two outer fabric doors. The abstract of the Eiffel tower detail is intended to evoke memories in the viewer as it is such an iconic piece of architecture everyone has an idea or a memory attached to such a piece. Hence tying in with the Cardboard Memories concept!

The material used to print on is Peel Ply as this is the thickest weave fabric i could get the didnt have a backing, therefore making it the perfect compromise between image and sound quality.

Cheshire – pencil case

cheshire - pencil case imageAnother work from my previous projects is ‘Cheshire’ a timber pencil case constructed using the coopered vessel method where angled pieces of timber combine to create an enclosed whole.

This piece, as with the ‘Internal’ bedside tables was inspired in part by japanese architecture and traditional japanese construction processes. The stand in particular holds closely to this concept and provides a perfect balance for the piece in both the open and closed versions of the case.

The stainless steel ends have been treated to provide another element to the finish of the piece, complimenting the natural aesthetics of the timbers chosen in construction and contrasting the brass hinges.

The cheshire title comes from the cheeky grin created as the piece sits with the lid slightly open. Providing a character and interactive element to the piece.

internal – bedside tables

internal - table imageAs a background to my practice i have decided to post images and description of my previous works to give viewers a better understanding of where i have come from in terms of design and construction.

This piece was created for a working surface brief which was to incorporate a working drawer. I decided to make a matching set of bedside tables and took influences (as with many of my designs) from architecture and elements of the built environment we inhabit.

This piece is a meshing of japanese archecture and The Farnsworth house by famous architect Miers Van Der Rohe. Hence the internal concept of displaying objects and having the internal elements become an integral part of the external, as the Farnsworth house does. The japanese components come through in the feel and the construction processes and joinery.

future directions for iwp

As i have previously stated i am required to complete an independent work proposal for the second half of the year. I am currently thinking about exploring the relationship between relaxation chairs and there accessories, ie chair and side table, chair and foot stool, chair and lamp etc. In doing this however i am lead to look at the influence music has on design. My initial thoughts on this are to segregate different families of furniture and associate a single genre of music to that family. Therefore throughout every element of the design and construction phases i will only listen to and subconsiously be guided by a different genre of music allocated to a different family of furniture. I will research this further and keep you posted.

anberlin- inevitable the progression of the adult toy box

March 29, 2009 key3designs Leave a comment

While looking into what i feel an adult toy box is, while keeping in mind the initial child’s toy box and memories of childhood that i have previously mentioned in my last post. A favorite song of mine came to mind. From US rockers Anberlin off their cities album, the track entitled Inevitable speaks of a time when cardboard boxes could take us miles from what we thought we would miss, and breaking every clock so the hands of time would never move again. These lyrics lead me to think back to childhood and a time when all you needed was a cardboard box and your imagination. in essence the cardboard box was indeed a child’s toy box, not for what was inside the box but for the box itself. Hence these lyrics would now become my concept behind the adult toy box.

As an adults imagination takes on a different role to that of a child i thought of what it was that had the ‘cardboard box’ potential for us as adults, and for me personally that feeling of being taken miles form what we know is an entertainment system. I realise that the imagination side of the equation has been dealt with externally, however this has the potential to take the place of the cardboard box in our hectic day to day lives.

kick off time

Well here we go…

Firstly to introduce me: I am a third year student at the Australian National University, studying design arts in fine furniture. I have previously studied interior design and have worked in both interior and exhibition design in London and here in Canberra (where i currently reside) though my passion still lies in designing and making fine furniture.

I plan to use this blog to promote my designing and making practice, talk through inspirations for current and future designs and generally keep my thoughts and designs up to date.

I hope that you enjoy following my journey….
